Native American Ancestry Associated With Severe Diabetic Retinopathy in Latinos

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of blindness in working age adults. Studies have observed that Latinos have a higher prevalence of DR than whites.

The purpose of this study was to test the association between genetic admixture and severe DR in Latinos with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The authors conducted a case–control study using 944 type-2 diabetes mellitus subjects from the Los Angeles Latino Eye Study. A total of 135 subjects were divided into proliferative or severe non proliferative DR, depending on their presentation. Other 809 diabetic subjects in the cohort as controls. Genotyping was performed, with genetic ancestry estimation in Latinos using the HapMap reference panels. The authors found that Native American ancestry in Latino type-2 diabetes mellitus subjects was associated significantly with severe DR. The association remained significant even after adjusting for age, sex, duration of diabetes, hemoglobin A1c, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, education, and income.

The authors thus concluded that Native American ancestry is a significant risk factor for severe DR in Latinos.
